"It was like a spotlight was following him as he stalked across the room, turned and then fired towards the hole, that clamped shut like an iris." - this opening line was intended to describe the opening of James Bond movies when he turns to the viewer and shoots.
"Max used a lot of things like a weapon: his fists, his thighs, his Wanger 25cm, knives, garrotting wire, sonic stunning from his inner ear implant and exploding credit cards." - a riff on the Walther 9mm and the litany of daft Bond gadgets available.
“I admit killing him would be a pleasure,” Max said - a reference to a line from The Man with the Golden Gun.
Other:
"...designated Level Rho." - Rho is the 17th letter of the Greek alphabet. Max is Agent 117 (or 1-17).
Clyde Daer - a fictional Scottish City and will be the base for The SEX Men. It was invented by combining the River Clyde and it's tributary, the Daer Resevoir.
SCION (Security Counter-Intelligence Observation Neutralisation) - it wouldn't be a spy parody without a silly acronym.
Pop culture reference:
“My name’s Rider Topsman, I’m here to rescue you,” Cyrus said. “I was sent by Yuri Tiedup.” - a paraphrase of Luke Skywalker 'rescuing' Leia.
Anton Martine XXII - a nod to the Aston Martin with XXII as (20)23 when the story is set.
Ghostrider-72 motorbike - reference to the Marvel character Ghost Rider, and the year he debuted.
1K Falcon (the transport plane used to get to Mr Sukerfeel's island) - a reference to the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars.
SG1-X302 (fighter craft in Mr Renton-Mass's hanger) - the X302 was a hyperspace capable ship in Stargate SG-1.
NX-01 (Mr Sukerfeel's customised private jet) - a reference to the NX-01 Enterprise from Star Trek.
"...he lamented the man dying knowing that his dream had ended in nothing. Max left the sleeper where he lay down..." - a paraphrase of Sydney Carton from "A Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens.
