Chapter Four Studio reporters Judith and Kyra are named for Judith O'Dea and Kyra Schon; actors who starred in Night of the Living Dead. Mr Clelland is named for Sheriff McClelland, a character in Night of the Living Dead. News reporter Marvin East is a homage to Marilyn Eastman who played Helen in Night of the Living Dead. Professor Dwane Jones is a homage to Duane Jones who played Ben in Night of the Living Dead. George chants "one of us, one of us," in reference to the 1932 film Freaks. The chant is used by a group of sideshow performers (considered "freaks" by outsiders) welcome a new member into their fold. Chapter Five Chilli says "Let the right one in," in reference to the novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist (and adapted into a film).
